[Drosophila melanogaster ICE] This enzyme is a member of a family of evolutionarily conserved cysteine protease proteins known as caspases. Many of these enzymes are part of a proteolytic cascade that plays a central role in cell death by apoptosis. DRICE (gene CG77880) is a Drosophila melanogaster caspase, which resembles executioner caspases. The Drosophila melanogaster steroid hormone ecdysone, which mediates cell death during metamorphosis by regulating the transcription of a number of cell death genes, is also responsible for the ubregulation of DRICE (Kilpatrick et al, 2005).
