Approved gene symbol: CST4 [cystatin-4]. This protein is a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine proteases and was identified originally as SAP-1 [Salivary acidic protein 1] by Isemura et al (1984) who detected the protein in human saliva (hence the "S") and immunohistochemically in the serous cells of human parotid and submaxillary glands. The human gene has been cloned by Saitoh et al (1991) and Bobek et al (1991) (Note: The cystatin D gene was called originally CST4 by Saitoh et al (1991) but was renamed CST5
