Cryptdins (short for Crypt alpha-Defensins) are intestinal defensins (mouse Alpha-Defensins) isolated from murine intestines (Eisenhauer et al, 1992). At least 17 cryptdin isoforms have been characterized from a cDNA library generated from a single jejunal crypt (Ouellette et al, 1992, 1994; Harwig et al, 1995; Huttner et al, 1994; Eisenhauer et al, 1992; Mastroianni JR and Ouellette AJ, 2009). These antimicrobial proteins are expressed in epithelial cells (Paneth cells) of intestinal crypts (Selstedt et al, 1992) and are being referred to also as Paneth cell defensins or Paneth cell alpha-Defensins
