This protein has been isolated from porcine duodenum (Abelson et al, 1986). It has been suggested to have functions of a hormone and stimulates chymotrypsinogen secretion (Abelson and Rothman, 1975). Chymodenin rapidly alters the proportions of digestive enzymes secreted by the rabbit pancreas in vivo and in vitro, by selection of the specific intra-pancreatic source from which the preset mixture of digestive enzymes is secreted (Abelson et al, 1986).
Bennett et al (1990) have reported that Chymodenin is identical with Cytochrome-c oxidase chain VII from bovine heart, with the exception of two minor amino acid alterations. The protein shows partial commonality of sequence with the glucagon / secretin
