[chromatin autophagy] Chromatophagy (Changou et al, 2014) is a form of macroautophagy that has been observed as cytotoxic autophagy in argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS1)-deficient prostate cancer cells. It is characterised by giant autophagosome formation, nucleus membrane rupture, and histone-associated DNA leakage and chromatin encaptured by autophagosomes under conditions of arginine starvation and eventually leads to cell death. The addition of the reactive oxygen species scavenger N-acetyl cysteine or knock-down of ATG5 or Beclin-1 attenuate the chromatophagy phenotype.
