Cachexia inducing factor |
CendR motif |
||
A protein, initially found to be secreted by macrophages, that in vitro suppressed the expression of enzymes of lipid metabolism in adipocytes and induced a cachectic state in vivo caused by systemic suppression of the enzyme lipoprotein lipase (LPL) (Beutler et al, 1985; Beutler and Cerami, 1988).
Cachectin is now known as TNF-alpha (Beutler et al, 1985). For another factor suppressing lipoprotein lipase expression see also: Cachexia inducing factor.
The term cachectin is still in use as a general term for cytokines inducing a state of cachexia.
