[chordin-like-2] (approved gene symbol: CHRDL2). CHL2 has been identified independently as BNF-1 [breast tumor novel factor 1].
This secreted protein is structurally most related to CHL (chordin). Like chordin, CHL2 induces a secondary axis when injected into Xenopus laevis embryos (Nakayama et al, 2004). The protein binds directly to bone morphogenetic proteins and inhibits their action, functioning as a secreted inhibitor. Expression of CHL2 has been shown to be restricted to chondrocytes. CHL2 expression in adult mesenchymal progenitor cells decreases during chondrogenic differentiation
