[chitinase 3-like-2] This protein of 39 kDa (364 amino acids; N-terminal amino acids are YKL, termed YKL39) has been isolated from the conditioned medium of human articular cartilage chondrocytes in primary culture (Hu et al, 1996). The amino acid sequence is most closely related to YKL-40, followed by macrophage chitotriosidase, oviductal glycoprotein, and macrophage YM-1. All proteins share significant sequence identity with bacterial chitinases and belong to a class of proteins referred to as chilectins. YKL-39 lacks the active site glutamate essential for chitinase activity. The highest level of YKL-39 mRNA expression is seen in chondrocytes, followed by synoviocytes
