[Cell death abnormality protein 8] The Caenorhabditis elegans gene CED8 has been isolated initially as a gene affecting the elimination of cells undergoing cell death by apoptosis (Ellis et al, 1991). CED8 encodes a transmembrane protein. The protein is similar to human XK, a putative membrane transport protein implicated in McLeod Syndrome, a form of hereditary neuroacanthocytosis. Knock-out nematodes lacking expression of CED8 show late appearance of cell corpses during embryonic development and thus CED8 appears to be involved in the timing of cell death by apoptosis (Stanfield and Horvitz, 2000).
