[XK blood group antigens]
The gene encoding the XK blood group antigen (termed also Kx antigen) is located at human chromosome Xp21.1 and has been characterized by Ho et al (1992, 1993). The gene product is predicted to be a 50 KDa polypeptide composed of 444 amino acids.
The Kx antigen is expressed ubiquitously, but is found mainly in nervous tissue, heart and erythrocytes (Ho et al, 1994; Lee et al, 2007; Clapéron et al, 2007).
In erythrocytes, the Kx antigen forms a complex on the red cell membrane, being linked covalently to the Kell blood group antigen
