The C33 antigen is an activation antigen of T-cells identified originally by monoclonal antibodies that inhibit syncytium formation induced by human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. The human protein is identical with R2, a cDNA recently isolated because of its strong upregulation after T-cell activation (Imai et al, 1992). The murine protein has 266 amino acid residues with 76 % identity to human CD82 and is considered the mouse homolog of the murine protein (Nagira et al, 1994).
