[syncytial cell, syncytium]
A general term for any kind of cell that fuses with adjacent cells to form a multinucleated large cells with fused cytoplasms (see also: giant cells). Such cells are said to form a syncytium. The contractile units of muscles are myofibers, which consist of elongated fully differentiated syncytial cells with many hundreds of postmitotic myonuclei and retains the capacity to regenerate itself following injury (Collins and Partridge, 2005; Sandri and Carraro, 1999). Multinucleated cells are observed also after infection with a variety of viruses (for some examples see: Greenough et al, 2005; Hooper et al, 2001; Gower et al, 2005).
