This neuropeptide, termed also Buccalin A (GMDSLAFSGGLamide), has been isolated from the marine mollusk Aplysia californica. It is expressed by two small cardioactive peptide-containing cholinergic motor neurons (the buccal motor neurons) and depresses accessory radula closer muscle contractions evoked by stimulation of this neuron (Cropper et al, 1988, 1990). Buccalin-like immunoreactivity is observed also in a variety of central and peripheral circuits in Aplysia, and it has been suggested that members of the buccalin peptide family may act as neuromodulators or neurotransmitters (Miller et al, 1992).
