Bryostatins are macrocyclic lactones isolated from the marine invertebrates Bugula neritina. More than 13 different but structurally closely related compounds have been isolated (Mutter and Wills, 2000; Davidson and Haywood, 1999) and a variety of synthetic analogs have been prepared (Wender et al, 1999).
Bryostatins are powerful activators of protein kinase C but may inhibit also in some cases members of the PKC family and thus regulate cell activation, growth, and differentiation by modulating the activities of protein kinase C isoenzymes. Bryostatins only elicit some, but not all, of those effects normally observed with Phorbol esters.
