abbr. GBP (a term with multiple meanings). Beta-galactoside-binding protein is produced constitutively by murine embryo fibroblasts. The cDNA sequence reveals a protein with a length of 134 amino acids (14.735 kDa) (Couraud et al, 1989). The corresponding gene contains four exons. The murine gene maps to the E region of chromosome 15 and the human gene maps to 22q12-q13.1 (Baldini et al, 1993).
The protein exists in two monomeric forms. One of these forms non-covalently binds to a glycan complex and this may facilitate paracrine activities. Tetrameric forms of the protein retain biological activity but are not capable of binding to specific saccharide residues.
