BSAC is composed of N-terminal basic, SAP (SAF-A/B, Acinus, PIAS), and coiled-coil domains. BSAC is a nuclear protein identified by its ability to rescue murine embryonic fibroblasts obtained from knock-out mice deficient in TRAF2 and TRAF5, from apoptotic cell death induced by TNF-alpha. Overexpression of BSAC in these fibroblasts partially inhibits TNF-induced cell death by suppressing the activation of caspases. BSAC thus is a transcriptional activator with anti-apoptotic functions.
