(approved gene symbol) [Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein] This is a 55 kDa cytotoxic cationic protein found in the azurophilic granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (Elsbach and Weiss, 1993) but is expressed also by a variety of other cell types, including intestinal epithelial cells (Canny et al, 2002, 2006). The protein has been identified independently as CAP57 [cationic antimicrobial protein 57]. It belongs to a larger family of proteins that are thought to play a role in innate immunity (See: PLUNC).
