(approved gene symbol) [brain expressed X-linked 1] This human gene (encoding a protein of 128 amino acids) is a member of a family of six genes with a wide tissue distribution in the human body, including the brain, pancreas, testis, and ovary (Brown and Kay, 1999; Yang QS et al, 2002; Alvarez et al, 2005). It was identified originally by Brown and Kay (1999) as a transcript with homology to an uncharacterized human X-linked gene that is upregulated in parthenogenetic mouse blastocysts compared with normal blastocysts and shows high expression in the brain.
