[bursal anti-steroidogenic peptide] This peptide has been isolated from the bursa of Fabricius, the central humoral immune organ unique to birds which plays important roles in B-lymphocyte differentiation. The partial amino acid sequence available for BASP strongly suggests a probable relationship of BASP with histone H1, a protein identified as a moonlighting protein (García-Espinosa et al, 2001). Calf thymus histone H1 also suppresses mitogen-stimulated chicken B-cell proliferation. These data indicate that BASP shares substantial structural homology with, and may be identical to, histone H1, which has been described to function as a moonlighting protein
