Histone H1 is a histone that binds to linker DNA between nucleosomes and is required for nucleosome condensation into higher-order chromatin fibers (DeLange and Smith, 1971).
Wei et al (2006) have identified a histone H1 coding sequence cloned from hemocytes of goldfish (Carassius auratus). It is 78 % homologous with the amino acid sequence of histone H1 from Salmon salar. The H1 histone of goldfish and its N-terminally derived peptide, termed histone H1(2-38) (AEVAPAASAPPAKAPKKKSAAKAKKAGPAVGDLIVKA), show antimicrobial activity and probably plays a role in innate immune responses of goldfish.
