[B7(+), B7(-), B7-1(+), B7-1(-)]
Name of an antigen appearing on activated B-cells that is the natural ligand of the cell surface protein CD28 (see also: cell activation). The protein is known also as B7-1 or BB1, and has been given the designation CD80 (Engel and Tedder, 1994). The antigen is being referred to also as LAB7 [lymphocyte activation antigen B7].
B7 provides an important positive costimulatory signal on interaction with CD28 on resting T-cells. Interaction of B7 with CTLA-4 on recently activated cells can restrict responses of T-cells (Sharpe and Freeman, 2002; Abbas and Sharpe, 1999).
