The cDNA for B4B has been isolated by Ruegg et al (1996). B4B is a membrane protein with 4 transmembrane domains. B4B shows approximately 40 % identity with a protein specific for Schwann cells that induces cell growth arrest, growth arrest-specific gene gas-3.
The protein is identical with TMP (tumor-associated membrane protein) (Ben-Porath et al, 1999), which is expressed highly in brain tumor cells but not in normal brain cells.
