The astacin protein family is a family of zinc endopeptidases, characterized by highly conserved regions containing the zinc binding motif, and another conserved region, SxMHY (so-called Met-turn) (Bond and Beynon, 1995). The name is derived from astacin, a digestive enzyme isolated from the freshwater crayfish Astacus astacus. This protein family is member of a larger family named metzincins. Guevara et al (2010) have reported the mechanism by which astacin proenzymes are activated from inactive (latent) zymogen forms.
