This term refers to a group of proteins synthesized by the human enteric protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica and the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar. It is used also in a more general sense for similar proteins from other amoebae (Zhai and Sasier, 2000; Nickel et al, 1999).
Amoebapores are structurally and functionally most similar to polypeptides of mammalian cytotoxic lymphocytes such as NK-lysin and granulysin (Leipe, 1995) and due to their architecture are members of a larger group of saposin-like proteins (see: SAPLIPs). Amoebapores are virulence factors that form ion channels in target cells and artificial lipid membranes, thereby causing cytolysis, cell death, and tissue damage.
