Alpha-MSH

[Melanocyte-stimulating hormone-alpha] This hormone is known also as Alpha-melanotropin or alpha-melanophore-stimulating hormone because the peptide acts on melanophores and causes skin darkening during adaptation to a dark background in amphibia and fish (Jenks et al, 2007). Alpha-MSH is encoded by the POMC [proopiomelanocortin] gene. See also: melanocytes.
