These cells are often being referred to as 3T3-L1 fibroblasts, 3T3-L1 adipocytes, or 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes. They are one of several cloned cell lines established from disaggregated Swiss mouse embryos that are capable of differentiating into cells resembling adipocytes (Green and Kehinde, 1976, 1975; Green and Meuth, 1974). The cells have the morphology of fibroblasts When they reach confluence they spontaneously arrest growth and can be induced to differentiate into white adipocytes in vitro. These cells are used widely as a model system for pre-adypocytes to study the differentiation
