A variety of peptidoglycan recognition proteins have been identified in zebrafish. Their structures resemble those of PGRP proteins found in arthropods and mammalians and represent long and short forms (see: PGRP). zebrafish PGRP proteins include zfPGRP6, zfPGRP2A, zfPGRP2B, zfPGRP-L, zfPGRPSC1a, zfPGRP-SC, zfPGRPSC2. Li et al (2007) have reported that these Zebrafish peptidoglycan recognition proteins are bactericidal amidases essential for defense against bacterial infections (see also: NAMLAA [N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase]).
