uroguanylin

abbr. UGN. Uroguanylin is a small peptide that exists in variants of 13, 14, and 15 amino acids derived from a larger precursor (Hamra et al, 1993, 1996; Li et al, 1997; Kita et al, 1994). These peptides contain four conserved cysteines. Uroguanylin was isolated initially from opossum (QEDCELCINVACTGC; Gln-Glu-Asp-Cys-Glu-Leu-Cys-Ile-Asn-Val-Ala-Cys-Thr-Gly-Cys) urine as an activity that stimulates cGMP production in T84 intestinal cells (Hamra et al, 1993, 1996). The bioactive peptide is located at the carboxyterminus of a larger precursor (Hill et al, 1995; Fan et al, 1996; Miyazato et al, 1996).
