[torocyte]
A term used in older references describing shape forms of erythrocytes that deviate from standard forms (see also: discocytes).
Hildebrandt et al (1988) have observed these doughnut-shaped cells in urinary sediments of children with glomerular hematuria, but not in urinary sediments of children with non-glomerular hematuria. Bunyaratvej et al (1985) have observed torocytes in the blood of patients with beta-thalassemia/HbE disease. Their numbers are increased with anemia and after spleenctomy, whereas a larger spleen is associated with a decrease of these cell types.
