[streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin B] speB is an exotoxin expressed by the strictly human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes, which preferentially colonizes the pharynx and the skin. It may cause life-threatening sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis, and a toxic shock syndrome following dissemination from the primary site, although many individuals can be healthy carriers of the bacteria in their upper airways (Bisno and Stevens, 1996). The gene has been cloned by Bohbach et al (1988).
