abbr. spz5. This Drosophila melanogaster protein encoded by gene CG9972, is known also as DNT2 [Drosophila neurotrophin 2]. The protein is related to Spätzle and is a member of the Cystine knot growth factor family. Interfering with the function of Spätzle-5 causes misrouting, mistargeting, and sprouting defects in motoraxon terminals (Zhu et al, 2008). Sutcliffe B et al (2013) have reported a role of Spätzle-5 in neuromuscular junction plasticity.
Spätzle-5 has been shown to act through the receptors Toll-6 and Toll-7 (McIllroy et al, 2013).
