This protein (Ono et al, 1990) is produced by the pars intermedia of the pituitary gland of fish and so far has been found in fish only (Amemiya et al, 1999; Fukamachi et al, 2004; Rand-Weaver et al, 1991; Vega-Rubinde et al, 2003). Release of somatolactin is enhanced by leptin and neuropeptide Y, not by growth hormone (Peyon et al, 2003).
