The term was introduced by Kerr (1971), Kerr et al (1992) for a type of cell death observed in an experimental model of hepatic ischemia. The dying cells were characterized morphologically by a shrunken appearance. This differed from the swollen cells observed during necrosis, which was the only type of cell death known at that time. The modern term for shrinkage necrosis is apoptosis.
