also: semenogelin. Abbr. SEMG, SEMG1. Abbr. also SGI. Mature Semenogelin-1 is a protein of 439 amino acids (Lilja et al, 1989). The gene structure has been elucidated by Ulvsback M et al (1992). Lundwall A et al (2003) have described the presence of a naturally occurring semenogelin-1 allele with a deletion of 60 amino acids from an internal tandem repeat region. The biological consequences are not known as the protein has many properties in common with the untruncated semenogelin-1 and heterozygous carriers do not show impaired fertility or altered sperm parameters. Robert M and Gagnon C (1996) have reported that semenogelin-1 is identical with a sperm motility inhibitor termed SPMI [seminal plasma sperm motility inhibitor].
