ribosomal protein S23

abbr. and gene symbol: RPS23. Ribosomal protein S23, known also as ribosomal protein uS12, is a structural component of the 40S subunit of ribosomes (40S ribosomal protein S23) and functions in protein synthesis (Li et al, 2005) as an essential mediator of translation fidelity (Sharma et al, 2007). Its homolog in prokaryotes is ribosomal protein S12 [RPS12] of the 30S subunit. Rat ribosomal protein S23 is identical to a human ribosomal protein and is also related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae ribosomal protein S28, to Tetrahymena thermophila ribosomal protein S12, and to the prokaryotic ribosomal protein S12 family of ribosomal proteins (Kitaoka et al, 1994; Li et al, 2005).
