Plantaricin A (KSSAYSLQMGATAIKQVKKLFKKWGW) is one of several related bacteriocins isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum (Nissen-Meyer et al, 1993; Anderssen et al, 1998). The protein acts as an extracellular signal (pheromone) that triggers bacteriocin production and at the same time acts as a membrane-permeabilizing antimicrobial peptide (Hauge et al, 1998; Kristiansen et al, 2005).
Sand et al (2007) have reported that plantaricin A permeabilizes cancerous, but not normal, rat pituitary cells and differentiates between the outer and inner membrane leaflet. At micromolar concentrations plantaricin A induces cell death in human leukemic T-cells by both necrosis and apoptosis (Zhao et al, 2006).
