This general term has been used to refer to thymic medullary epithelial cells (see, for example: Hanahan et al, 1998; Zheng et al, 2004). These cells express peripheral antigens via a mechanism depending on AIRE [autoimmune regulator] and essentially contribute to the establishment of self-tolerance by the deletion of self-reactive T-cells and the generation of regulatory T-cells (Anderson and Takahama, 2012).
