paraptosis

[paraptotic]

A form of programmed cell death that appears to proceed without characteristic features observed usually with apoptosis (Sperandio et al, 2000). A morphologically similar forms of cell death has been described as cytoplasmic cell death or type 3B developmental cell death.

Paraptosis as an alternative form of cell death has been observed in 293T-cells and in embryonic fibroblasts derived from knock-out mice lacking expression of APAF-1 and engineered to express the intracellular domain of the IGF-1 receptor.
