This peptide, LLIILRRRIRKQAHAHSK, has been identified by Elmquist et al (2002). It is derived from VE-cadherin (cadherin-5, CD144) and corresponds to VE-cadherin(615-632) (also: pVEC(615-632)). pVEC has been identified as a cell-penetrating peptide that has been shown to be internalized by human aortic endothelial cells, brain capillary endothelial cells, Bowes melanoma cells, and murine brain endothelial cells and is slightly more effective than penetratin. pVEC functions as a transporter of both a hexameric peptide
