abbr. CDH5. Cadherin-5 has been identified by Suzuki et al (1991). Cadherin-5 is a member of the type 2 cadherins that shares sequence features with classical type 1 cadherins but differs from them by showing low homology. Cadherin-5 is identical with the 7B4 antigen. Cadherin-5 is identical with VE-cadherin [vascular-endothelial cadherin].
Cadherin-5 expression appears to be limited to vascular endothelial cells. Cadherin-5 mediates homophilic, calcium-dependent aggregation and cell-to-cell adhesion and decreases intercellular permeability to high-molecular weight molecules. It also reduces cell migration (Breviario et al, 1995).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens the designation for cadherin-5 is CD144.
