Osteostatin corresponds to PTHrP[107-139] (Parathyroid hormone-related protein(107-139); parathyroid hormone-like related protein(107-139)) (TRSAWLDSGVTGSGLEGDHLSDTSTTSLELDSR), a C-terminal fragment derived by endoproteolytic cleavage of the initial translation product of PTHrP [parathyroid hormone-like related protein]. Studies with knock-out mice expressing a truncated hormone protein lacking the midregion, a nuclear localization sequence (NLS), and C-terminus of the protein show the critical importance of this region. Knock-mice die within 5 days after birth, demonstrating also that many of the effects of PTHrP
