This general term refers to any kind of protein that coats microorganisms, dead cells, particles, liposomes or any antigenic molecule in a specific or unspecific manner and facilitates the recognition and uptake of these entities by phagocytes such as macrophages or neutrophils or for destruction by cells such as natural killer cells. The process of attaching an opsonin to an entity and mark it for phagocytosis is called opsonisation.
Important opsonins are, for example, components of the complement system such as complement component C3b, complement component C4b, and complement component C1q
