opcA (formerly opc), is an outer membrane protein of Neisseria meningitidis, the causative agent of meningitis and septicemia. The protein acts as an invasin that facilitates infection of epithelial cells and endothelial cells (Virji et al, 1992). Several other proteins (Pili and Opa) determine host and tissue specificity, while Opa and Opc facilitate efficient cellular invasion (Carbonnelle et al, 2009). Traversal across the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, which involves interactions with human brain microvascular endothelial cells, is an essential step in the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis.
Virji et al (1994) have reported that Opc binds to serum factor(s). This, in turn, increases adherence to endothelial cells
