These cells are called also Schultze cells (Schultze, 1856, 1863). These cells are specialized olfactory receptor neurons lying between the epithelial cells in the mucous membrane of the nose. The cells convey chemosensory information to the olfactory bulb (for overview see: Schild and Restrepo, 1998).
