Octopressin (CFWTSCPIGamide) is a member of the vasopressin / oxytocin superfamily isolated from the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris (Takuwa-Kuroda et al, 2003). Octopressin mRNA is expressed in the supraesophageal and subesophageal brains, and the buccal and gastric ganglia. The neuropeptide has been shown to cause contractions of the Octopus peripheral tissues such as oviduct, aorta, rectum and may be a multifunctional neuropeptide contributing to reproduction, cardiac circulation, and feeding.
Bardou et al (2010) have reported that octopressin influences long-term memory of a passive avoidance task in the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.
