this term refers to mechanosensory hair cells in the lateral line of fish species and some aquatic amphibians that permit detection of water movements (Dijkgraaf, 1963; Bleckmann, 1994; for overview see also: Thomas et al, 2015). Superficial neuromasts are freestanding on the skin. Canal neuromasts are located in lateral line canals and are part of discrete clusters of sensory hair cells, supporting cells, and mantle cells (Münz, 1985). Frequently, the term neuromasts is used also to refer to the functional units of the lateral line system. The term Interneuromast cells refers to a cell type positioned between primary neuromasts and adjacent to the lateral line nerve and associated glial cells
