nematocytes

[nematocyte]

called also: cnidocytes. This cell type is found in the freshwater hydrozoan polyp Hydra. There are four types of nematocytes in Hydra, termed stenoteles, desmonemes, holotrichous isorhizas, and atrichous isorhizas (Slautterback and Fawcett, 1959; David and Challoner, 1974; for overview see also: Bode and Flick, 1976). Nematocytes are mechano-sensory cells and function as stinging cells that discharge nematocysts in response to physical contact accompanied by the stimulation of specific chemoreceptors (see, for example: Plachetzki et al, 2012; Babonis and Martindale, 2014). Most of the mature nematocytes migrate through the ectoderm ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
