These cells constitute one of the intermediary stages in the development of all three types of granulocytes. The cells are no longer capable of cell division. This precursor of granulocytes is characterized by a round nucleus and the initiation of secondary granule formation. The compounds in primary and secondary granules are necessary to kill and degrade infectious agents or toxic or non-self material). Metamyelocytes cannot yet initiate phagocytosis and also cannot respond to chemotactic factors. For a description see also: Brederoo et al, 1983).
