Murine macrosialin is a heavily glycosylated transmembrane protein (Holness et al, 1993). It is expressed in macrophages and macrophage-related cells (Jiang et al, 1998; Li et al, 1998). Macrosialin is expressed as a late endosomal protein. The protein is found also on the cell surface where it binds oxidized LDL. Thus, macrosialin may play a role in lipoprotein regulation. The human homolog is CD68 (Holness et al, 1993).
