[left-right determination factor 1] This human gene has been identified by Meno et al (1996, 1997). The gene has been termed also Lefty B [left-right determination factor B] (Kosaki et al, 1999). Lefty-1 is a secreted member of the TGF-beta family of growth factors. It is involved in the determination of left-right asymmetry determined early during development and is expressed on the left side of developing embryos.
